Borna Coric was impressed with the beauty of Rio de Janeiro during a visit to Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) this Friday and says he plans to do some more sightseeing while he is in Brazil.
“The city is absolutely amazing. I already heard a lot of good things about Rio and I was looking forward to coming here. I just landed like 12 hours ago and got this unbelievable view that I was not expecting in a way because I had never seen it, only in pictures, so I’m really happy to be here”, said the Croatian player.
Despite his visit to the city in 2016 during the Olympic Games, this felt like the first time for him. That time he did not have time to go sightseeing and barely left the athlete’s village.
“Rio is definitely something special, you know, I didn’t get the chance to see a lot yet, because it’s my first time sightseeing. I decided only in October that I was coming here so I was really looking forward to coming here and hoping that I get a chance to do some sightseeing in Rio.”
Coric is one of 11 ATP top-50 players who will be in action next week during the seventh edition of the carioca tournament. Austrian Dominic Thiem, Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, Pablo Cuevas (URU) and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco are amongst them.
Ranked number 31 in the world, Coric played the Argentina Open this week, where he lost to Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in the second round.
This year he also played the Australian Open _was defeated by American Sam Querry in the first round_ and also the ATP Cup where he faced Huber Hurkacz and two other players who are going to be in Rio: Thiem and Schwartzman.
The 23-year-old Croatian player also said that he has plans to visit some of the famous Rio’s favelas, but only if his training schedule allows him to do so.
“I was thing of maybe visiting some favelas and also to see the Christ but I’m not sure I’ll have time for that because obviously I have to practice as well. But I’m definitely going to try to do that.”
The 2020 edition of the Rio Open presented by Claro will take place between the 15th and the 23rd of February at the Jockey Club Brasileiro.
Qualifying for the event will happen on February 15th and 16th and entry is free.
