A 36-year old veteran and a 16-year old youngster will take the courts of Jockey Club Brasileiro at the opening day of the Rio Open presented by Claro.

Fernando Verdasco, who’s playing his 20th season as a professional, will be the first to debut at the carioca tournament. At 4:30 pm (local time), at Quadra Guga Kuerten, he will face fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar for the sixth time in his career. Verdasco has won three times, the last one in Doha, in January.

This will be the Spaniard’s second participation at the Rio Open. He was runner-up in 2018 (lost to Diego Schwartzman) at the singles’ draw and won the doubles alongside David Marrero.

Later this Monday, not before 8 pm, also at Quadra Guga Kuerten, it will be Carlos Alcaraz’s time to debut at an ATP 500 event.

The 16-year old Spaniard will become the youngest-ever player to compete at the main draw of the Rio Open.

Alcaraz will take on fellow countrymate Albert Ramos-Vinolas, seventh seed at the event.

“To be honest I’m here in Rio to enjoy and to learn as much as I can from watching the other players”, said the teenager, who’s coached by former number one in the world Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Also playing this Monday, not before 7pm, is Brazilian Thiago Wild, who faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, from Spain.
