Playing in South America for the first time in three years, top seed Alexander Zverev is back in action this Friday at Jockey Club Brasileiro for his quarterfinal match against Argentinian Franscisco Comesana. Their first ever match up opens the night session at Court Guga Kuerten, not before 6pm, local time.
“I don’t know much about him, to be honest. I know he had a very good win over [Andrey] Rublev in Wimbledon. He’s young, he’s an upcoming player and is playing very good tennis. I saw his second round match which I thought it was very hight level from him, but I’m looking forward to playing him for the first time”, said the German.
Zverev looks to be the highest ranked champion in Rio since Rafael Nadal won the inaugural edition of the ATP 500 event in 2014.
“I'm playing better that in Buenos Aires but on clay it usually takes me two, three or four weeks to play well on clay but I feel I’m getting better. I feel like I'm finding my rhythm more and more.”
Also on court at Jockey Club Brasileiro this Friday is reigning champion of the Rio Open Sebastian Baez. The Argentinian faces qualifier Chun-Hsin Tseng (TPE), who stunned Brazilian Thiago Monteiro on Wednesday.
Baez looks to become the first ever two-time champion in Rio.
