Only one of the four Brazilians that were in action at the opening day of the Rio Open presented by Claro made it to the second round of the ATP 500.
In his tenth appearance at the tournament, Thiago Monteiro survived a thriller to advance to the next round for the sixth year in a row. This time he defeated Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta by 3/6, 6/3 and 7/6 (3) in two hours and 39 minutes.
“It was another magical night here in Rio and I’m really happy with this win. I knew that this match was going to be a battle and I’m glad I made it through. Acosta is a very tough player and I din’t get a good start”, said Monteiro who is in tenth edition of the tournament. He now faces Chun-Hsin Tseng (TPE) in the second round. “It's not going to be an easy match. Tseng comes from the qualifying and I need to be in good shape.”
Felipe Meligeni Alves was the first one to debut this Monday. In his fourth appearance at the Main Draw of the ATP 500 event, Meligeni Alves lost his first round match to Alexander Schevchenko (KAZ) by 6/4 and 6/2.
"I’m very disappointed with the way I played today. I started breaking him and then I saw him getting better and I wasn’t able to make him uncomfortable on court. I think I was a bit anxious and that didn’t help”, said the Brazilian.
In his first appearance at the main draw of the Rio Open, Gustavo Heide was also defeated this Monday. The wild card lost to Argentinian Francisco Comesana in the fifth longest match of the tournament history: three hours and 21 minutes.
Comesana prevailed by 7/6, 6/7 and 6/3. "It was a battle and I’m sure it is a result of all the hard work I’ve been doing, not only physical but also mental”, said the Argentinian.
And last one to say goodbye to his local fans was Thiago Wild, who lost to Jaume Munar. In a rematch from last year’s second round, when Wild reached his lone quarter-final above ATP 250 level, this time the Spaniard prevailed in three sets. Munar won by 6/4, 3/6 and 6/0.
